Companies House Director Verification Process
Understanding the Companies House Director Verification Process
As part of ongoing reforms to enhance corporate transparency, Companies House has introduced a new identity verification process for company directors. While currently voluntary, this process will become mandatory from autumn 2025.
Companies House is now emailing company directors with instructions on how to verify their identity. These emails are sent to the company’s registered email address. Official communications will always include the Companies House branding and logo and users will be directed to gov.uk domains only – sensitive information such as passwords or payment details will never be requested by email.
Why Verification Matters
Director identity verification is part of broader efforts to combat fraud and improve trust in the UK’s corporate landscape. Once a director is verified via the GOV.UK One Login, that verification will apply across all companies where the individual serves as a director—avoiding the need to repeat the process.
How to Verify Your Identity
To complete the verification process, follow these general steps:
- Check for the Official Email
Look for a message from Companies House with instructions on how to proceed. - Use the GOV.UK One Login
If you don’t already have an account, create one using the email registered with Companies House. Note: this login system is separate from the Government Gateway, although a long-term consolidation is planned. - Prepare Identification Documents
Acceptable forms of ID include a valid passport or photocard driving licence. Ensure your details match those on record with Companies House. - Complete the Online Checks
This may involve uploading documents and taking a real-time selfie to confirm your identity. - Notify Fellow Directors
It’s important that all directors complete the verification process.
Looking Ahead
Upon successful identity verification, Companies House will issue each director with a unique personal code. It is important to keep this code safe, as it will be required for making future submissions to Companies House.
Verification is quick and straightforward—and starting early helps ensure your company remains compliant well ahead of the mandatory deadline.
